The Nervous System Flashcards
Central Nervous System
Brain and spinal chord
Peripheral Nervous System
Nerves leave brain stem or spinal cord to activate muscles of the head or body. Sensations from these regions are translated to the CNS by peripheral nerves.
Neurons
specialized tissue - transmits information from one neuron to another, from neurons to muscles, from sensory receptors to other neural structures.
Afferent
sensing/receiving information: sensory pathways - from peripheral to central
Efferent
Acting on information: motor pathways - from central to peripheral
Corticospinal pathway - initiating voluntary movement
the pathway carries impulses from the cerebral cortex to the spinal cord for motor activation. The spinal nerves will carry the information to specific muscles.
Cranial nerves
PNS components arising from the brain stem that innervate structures associated with speech and hearing.
the I. olfactory and 2. optic nerve arise from the cerebrum.
Cerebral Cortex
responsible for conscious thought and voluntary action
Cerebellum
coordinates sensory and motor plans
Brain stem
mediates life functions, serves the origination for cranial nerves. subcortical region.
