Elementary Tissue Flashcards
Epithelial Tissue
The cells making up the skin and the superficial layer of mucous membranes, as well as the LININGS OF CAVITIES of the body.
May have CILIA or hair like protrusions that beat to remove contaminants from the epithelial surface
Includes glandular or SECRETING tissue
Areolar or Loose tissue
Type of connective tissue - is found between muscles as a thin, membranous sheet between organs.
Adipose tissue
Type of connective tissue - it is Areolar tissue that is highly impregnated with fat cells
Lymphoid tissue
Type of connective tissue - Specialized connective tissue found in tonsils and adenoids
Fibrous Tissue/Dense connective tissue
type of connective tissue - Binds structures together and may contain combinations of fiber types.
2 types - white and yellow
Cartilage
both strong and elastic; can neither be pulled apart nor crushed.
3 types - Hyaline, fibro-cartilage, yellow elastic cartilage
White fibrous tissue
strong and dense, found in ligaments and fascia
yellow elastic tissue
cartilaginous connective tissue for things that need to spring back to original shape (Trachea)
Hyaline
Type of cartilage. smooth and strong. Found on surface of bones. found in joints, rib cage, larynx, trachea, bronchi
Fibro-Cartilage
Type of Cartilage. Contains collagen, good shock absorber, cushions TEMPOMANDIBULAR joint
Yellow elastic cartilage
Type of cartilage. very flexible. Outer ear, nose, epiglottis.
Blood
Type of connective tissue. red and white blood cells in plasma matrix –> transports gas, nutrients, waste.
Bone
Type of connective tissue. Hardest of the connective tissues.
2 types - Compact bone, spongy bone
compact bone
Type of bone/connective tissue. sheets or layers, dense and strong.
spongy bone
type of bone/connective tissue. Porous, may contain marrow.
