Anatomical Terms Flashcards
Anatomical position
body is erect with palms, arms, and hands facing fwd.
Anterior
towards the front of the body or subpart
Ventral
Pertaining to the belly or anterior surface
Asthenia
Weakness
Bifurcation
A fork; split into two parts
Caudal
Towards the tail or coccyx
central
relative to the center of a structure
cranial
towards the head
deep
away from the surface. more internal.
Distal
Further from the trunk or thorax; further from the attached end. “my hand is distal to my elbow.” relative
Dorsal
Pertaining to the back of the body
Extension
Straightening or moving out of the flexed position. pulling two ends farther apart.
External
toward the exterior of a body
Flexion
the act of bending
Coronal/frontal plane
divides the body into anterior and posterior halves (front and back halves)
Inferior
the lower point; nearer the feet. “my foot is inferior to my knee.”
Transverse/horizontal plane
divides the body or body part into upper and lower halves
Insertion
Distal attachment of a muscle; typically the most mobile point of attachment - moves during contraction
Internal
Enclosed or on the interior
Lateral
away from the midline of the body or subpart (side). “your eyes are lateral to the bridge of the nose.”
medial/mesial
toward the midline of the body or subpart. “the bridge of the nose is medial to the eyes.”
origin
proximal attachment of a muscle; typically the least mobile point of attachment
palmer
pertaining to the palm of the hand
peripheral
relative to the periphery or away from the center. more external.
plantar
pertaining the the sole of the foot
posterior
towards the back of the body or subpart
prone
body in horizontal position with face down
proximal
closer to the trunk or thorax; closer to the attached end. “my elbow is proximal to my hand.” relative
radial
pertaining to the radius bone
sagittal plane
divides the body or body part into right and left halves
superficial
near the surface
superior
the upper point; nearer the head “my head is superior to my knee.”
supine
body in horizontal position with face up
adduct
moving a limb towards the midline
abduct
moving a limb away from the midline
Dorsiflexion
AKA hyperextension. flexion that brings dorsal surfaces into closer proximity. raising your foot upwards towards your shin.
Hyperextension
extreme extension/straightening past the point of extension
plantar flexion
Moving foot downward away from body
inversion
turning foot in
eversion
turning foot out
Ipsilateral
on the same side as another structure
contralateral
on opposite sides of another structure
Neuraxis
axis of the nervous system. From your brain to your spinal chord. curves into T shape.
axial skeleton
bones of your head and trunk
spine
axis of skeleton
appendicular skeleton
bones of appendages (arms, legs)
