The Nervous System Flashcards
What does the Autonomic Nervous System do?
Involuntary controls
What does the Somantic Nervous System do?
Voluntary controls
Name ONE part of the CNS
Brain, SNS or ANS
Dendrite function?
To carry impulses towards the cell body
What is an axon?
Something which carries impulses AWAY from the cell body
What is an axon terminal?
End of the axon, is where a synapse is found to connect the dendrites
Effects of myelination
Insulation and speeding up of impulse transmissions
What is the process of a reflex arc?
The receptor detects a stimulus and transmits an impulse through a sensory neuron to a relay neuron in the spinal cord.
It is transmitted to a motor neuron to an effector to create the appropriate response
How can nerves be damaged?
Reduced blood flow, NS trauma and neurological diseases
How can nerve damage be checked?
Nerve condition velocity test (electrical impulse speeds) and Reflex Testing
Hyperpolarization occurs in an axon cell because
The potassium ions may be slow and if there’s too many possible diffuse outside the cell
Myelin sheath function
Allows electrical impulses to transmit quickly and efficiently along the nerve cells
Myelin sheath structure
In a spiral, extended, in three parts and is wrapped around nerve axons
