Q

What is inflammation and how does it help?

A

Is a localised response to cell + tissue damage, activates phagocytes + initiates tissue repair

Q

What is phagocytosis?

A

A cell will ingulf and digest molecules.

It starts with activating, tracking the cell, attaching then digesting it.

14
Q

What is the primary response?

A

Occurs when a pathogen enters the body, and the response is slow as it is NEW. Soon antibodies resist it and when they get it again the body knows HOW to deal with them.

15
Q

What is the secondary response?

A

The same pathogen enters again, the immune system is quicker to kill it. The T and B lymphocytes remember how to kill it, so the infected person shows no symptoms

16
Q

How can someone come in contact with a pathogen?

A

Consuming contaminated food + water and direct contact with a carrier

17
Q

What is active immunity?

A

If YOU can make your OWN antibodies because you’ve been exposed with it before

18
Q

What is passive immunity?

A

Immunity due to being given antibodies by SOMEONE ELSE. Can happen from injections and the womb as a child

19
Q

What is herd immunity?

A

If an unvaccinated, uninfected person is surrounded by vaccinated people they cannot contract a disease

20
Q

What is the main flaw of passive immunity?

A

At one point, all units will degrade, and you’ll be left with none left
