the nervous system Flashcards
Types of Receptors
-chemoreceptors
-thermoreceptors
-photoreceptors
-Mechanoreceptors
Chemoreceptors
Detects the presence of chemicals
Mechanoreceptors
Detects mechanical change
Photoreceptors
Detects light
Thermoreceptors
Detects change in temperature
Types of sense receptors
-auditory
-visual
-gustatory
-olfactory
-somatosensory
Auditory
-hair cells on inner ear vibrate according to pitch and volume of sounds
-sends impulses to the brain via the auditory nerve to brain for processing
Somatosensory
Skin contains receptors that respond to touch, temperature and pressure
(Whiskers also contribute)
Olfactory
Nasal cavity receptor responds to outdoor molecules in the air
Gustatory
The younger of many animals contains papillae which contains taste buds
Responds to chemical in the food and drink to give different sensations to the taste receptors
(Not all animals perceive taste in the same way)
Visual
Photoreceptors in the retina of the respond to light
what does the central nervous system do?
controls most of the functions and responses in the body- made up of brain and spinal cord
what is cerebrospinal fluid?
a shock absorbing fluid that surrounds the CNS
what does the peripheral nervous system do?
the nerves connect spinal cord to the rest of the body- made up of sensory and motor neurons
what does the somatic nervous system do?
detects and responds to stimuli outside the body
