The Nervous System Flashcards
What is the structure of cerebellum?
Large lump like structure found at bottom on rear side.
What is function of cerebellum?
Responsible for controlling fine movements of muscles, move in complex ways.
What is structure of cerebral hemispheres?
2 large cerebral hemispheres, taking up most of the skull, sit on left and right hand.
What is function of cerebral hemisphere?
Conscious , memory, intelligence, as well as visual and sensory processing.
What is structure of medulla oblongata?
Small elongated structure found in the brainstem, base of the brain.
What is function of medulla oblongata?
Maintaining basic automatic functions, like breathing, digestion, swallowing, sneezing.
How is injury and disease in brain founded?
Using CT scans and PET scans
What is CT scan?
Fire x ray radiation from different angles to form image of brain, used for bleeding within skull, and damage to brain structures, not recommended for pregnant women, as exposes high number of radiation.
What is PET scan?
A radioactive tracer is injected into blood, areas where tracer builds us, highlighted brightly, recongising cancerous tumours, as these use more blood.
Why is investigating brain difficult?
The brain is complex and delicate, its easily damaged, drugs given to treat disease cannot always be treated.
What is the structure of sensory neurones?
One long dendron and an short axon.
What is the structure of relay neurones?
Short dendrites, and long axon.
What is the structure of motor neurones?
Short dendrites, and an axon.
What are sensory neurones?
Axon carrying nerve impulse from cell body to CNS.
What are relay neurones?
Axon carrys nerves impulses to motor neurones.
