What is an insider?
- Someone who belongs and identifies with a place, feel secure and comfortable at home
- More likely to oppose developments
What is an outsider?
- Usually minority groups or migrants
- Misunderstand social rules and interactions
What is an experienced place?
A place a person has spent time in
What is a media place?
A place one has only seen in the media (eg. films and the news)
Explain the concept of near and far places
Geographically ‘near, places are not automatically welcoming and comforting.
Geographically ‘far’ places are not automatically strange and different.
Define the two factors contributing to the characteristics of a place
Endogenous - Originate in the area, include aspects of the land it’s built on
Exogenous - Originate outside the area, often influenced by other places
Give some examples of endogenous factors
- Physical factors; relief, soil type, topology
- Demographic factors; population size, ethnicity, age
- Employment opportunities
Give some examples of exogenous factors
- Globalisation (multicultural society)
- Technology
- Links and relationships with other places
