Q

The nature of change and resistance to change

A

Group: a voice for men, believes that culture places women first and men last. Argues that radical feminism is a female supremacy ideology and seeks a men’s right movement.
Argues that feminism teaches men that “masculinity” is wrong. There is misplaced blame on feminism for issues such as the heightened rate of suicide amongst men. Ultimately the issue is caused by marginalising forces like class and race. The patriarchal culture and its strictly enforced gender roles are what leads to these issues.
Whilst men do face oppression and marginalisation within society, these issues are caused by reasons other than gender, such as: race, class, sexuality, and poverty. There are issues disproportionately affecting men like suicide, workplace injuries and less likely to report domestic or sexual abuse.
Lauren Sutherland believes that feminism is not a movement for equality, arguing that many of the issues facing men are not truly represented by the feminist movement leading to an unequal representation or outright silence on male issues such as suicide, workplace deaths, and domestic or sexual abuse.
All the arguments by Lauren have been explained, justified and largely proven false or misguided.
Yet another example of resistance to change and dissent can be seen in the ‘gender pay gap bake sale’ at the University of QLD. The bake sale was designed to raise awareness for the gender pay gap that exists in Australia today. Women were charged comparatively to what they would earn in their profession. However, the bake sale caused much backlash that resulted in online threats of rape, assault, death threats and personal attacks against the organisers.
