The National Grid Flashcards
What is the difference between a step up and step down transformer?
The voltage is increased if the electricity goes from the power station to a step up transformer also this minimises energy loss in transmission. The electricity goes through a step down transformer to reduce the voltage to a safer level for use by consumers.
What happens in a substation?
Electricity transferred from the transformer by high voltage transmission lines to an electricity substation.
What is the national grid?
When electricity has been generated it needs to be distributed to consumers in homes, shops and offices. The electricity you use is transferred around the country by the national grid. This is the mains supply that is available whenever you switch on an appliance at home.
