Solids, Liquids And Gases Flashcards
What are the properties of solids, liquids and gases?
Solid- fixed shape and fixed volume
Liquid- no fixed shape but fixed volume
Gas- no fixed shape( takes the shape of its container ) and no fixed volume
What happens to the particles when the temperature decreases and increases?
As the temperature increases, the size of the vibrations, or speed of the particles increases, the particles take up more space and the substance expands.
When the temperature decreases, the particles have less energy. In a solid, they vibrate less and so take up less space. In liquids and gases the particles also have less energy and move more slowly. The gas or liquid becomes more dense.
What are the particles like in solids, liquids and gases?
Particles in solids are packed close together in a regular pattern. Particles in a liquid still attract one another and are still packed close together but not in a regular way. Particles in gases are too spread out to attract one another much.
