Biomass And Biofuels Flashcards
1
Q
What is biofuel?
A
Biomass which is used for burning is biofuel, similar to fossil fuels.
2
Q
What are some examples of biofuels?
A
- Wood and woodchips
- Alcohol fuels
- Methane gas
- Nutshells
- Vegetable oils
3
Q
What are some advantages to biomass?
A
- Uses products which might otherwise be wasted so the fuel costs are very low
- Power stations can also sully hot water to local industry/houses
- Carbon neutral
4
Q
What are some disadvantages to biomass?
A
- Releases atmospheric pollutants
- In developing countries land which could be used for food is now being used to grow crops for biofuels, leading to food shortages
- Power plants can be ugly to look at(visual pollution)

Q
What is biomass?
A
Renewable energy resource. There are lots of different types but all forms of biomass involve material produced by living organisms.
