the multi-store model of memory Flashcards
Who designed the MSM?
Attkinson and Shiffrin (1968,1971)
What order does the MSM travel?
sensory register, STM, LTM
Whats the sensory register? (SR)
recieves all stimuli from the environment.
Whats the coding in the SR?
Modality-specific
Whats the duration of the SR?
less than half a second
Whats the capacity of the SR?
very high
How is information coded in the STM?
acoustically
Whats the duration of STM?
18 seconds
Whats the capacity of STM?
limited, we can only remember a certain amount of things before we forget.
Whats maintennance rehearsal?
The repetition of material so we can keep it in our STM, rehearsed enough it goes to LTM
Hows LTM coded?
semantically
Whats the capacity of LTM
practically unlimited
Whats the duration of LTM?
up to a lifetime
how to we tranfer infromation from LTM to STM?
retrieval
what are the strengths of MSM?
- Baddeley’s (1966) study proves that STM and LTM are different
what are the limitations of MSM?
- MSM may not be valid as we have to remember more meaningful information in everyday life
- evidence suggests theres more than one store in the STM, Warrington (1970) had a patient with amnesia who remembered certain things but not others.
- Elaborative rehearsal is needed for long term storage, MSM doesnt fully show how to achieve long term storage
Whats the case of HM?
He underwent brain surgery where they removed his hippocampuses. in 1955 he thought it was 1953, that he was 27 when he was 31. He couldnt form any new memories after the surgery.
