What is Functional Neurologic symptom disorder?
- one or more sx or deficits affecting voluntary motor or sensory function that suggest a neuro or other general medical condition
- it’s weird
What are some conversion disorder symptoms?
- paresthesias and anesthesias
- weakness
- paralysis
- pseudoseizures
- involuntary movements
- sensory disturbances: blindness, mutism
Conversion disorder tx
- counseling
- PT
- treating related stress and other conditions: SSRI’s, Benzodiazepenes
- Transcranial magnetic stimulation
Do ppl with conversion disorder get better?
-yes!
What are Factitious disorders?
- factitious disorder imposed on self
- voluntary control of sx… to gain attention for being sick
- undergoes multiple medical and surgical procedures
- self injected feces or saliva….Muchausen’s
- Bizarre or unusual sx
How do you treat Munchausen’s?
-don’t run a bunch of tests on them
Dissociative disorders
-dissociative amnesia: inability to recall important personal info, usually info regarding traumatic experience
What is dissociative fugue?
- sudden, unexpected travel away from home
- inability to recall one’s past/personal identity
What is dissociative identity disorder?
- formerly known as “multiple personality disorder”
- Alters
- often survivors of sexual abuse
What are adjustment disorders?
-occur within 3 months of a serious life stressor and lasting less than 6 months (can persist over 6 months in presence of chronic stressor
How much does suicide cost?
- 93.5 BILLION $ in 2013
- #10 in rank on cause of death
Where are suicide rates higher?
-in rural areas
Suicide risk factors?
- family hx of suicide
- Family hx of child maltreatment
- Previous suicide attempts***, severity of previous attempts
- hx of mental disorders, particularly depression
- history of alcohol and substance abuse
What do we have to make sure we do with risk factors for suicide?
-freaking DOCUMENT THEM
