They went to senior secondaries where they studied academic subjects such as science and history

Went to junior secondaries where they studied technical subjects such as woodwork or cooking
Successes on the 11+
- clever pupils from poor backgrounds to get a good education and work their way out of poverty
- other pupils would be taught at a level which suited them and gave them skills to then get a job
Failures of the 11+
- poor people who failed would be kept in poverty
- unfair to plan a child’s future when they were 11
Why did Labour introduce a nationwide programme to build new schools?
- increased numbers of children attending (baby boom)
- damage caused during war
Successes of building new schools?
- learning in better environments, helping improve education
- created jobs, tackling unemployment
Failures of building new schools
- due to costs involved, many didn’t benefit from new schools and continued to be taught in outdated buildings
- focused on primary schools buildings, many secondary pupils missed out on new buildings
