Appeasment And Road To War #3: The League Of Nations Flashcards
(National) Self-determination
Countries rule themselves opposed to being ruled by an empire
Open discussion
Countries would talk openly about their problems instead of secret agreements
Collective Security
If one member state was attacked, all others would help
Disarmament
Would prevent armies being massive by taking away military supplies
How many members began in the LoN?
- All of these members had fought for or supported the Allies during WW1.
Why did the US Congress vote not to join the league?
They didn’t want to be part of the league so as not to get involved in European disputes
Why was it surprising that the USA voted not to join the LoN?
- Wilson was key in its foundation
- The US was the most powerful and wealthy nation in the world during the 1920’s
Who wasn’t allowed to join the LoN?
- defeated countries (yet Germany joined in 1926)
- The USSR also weren’t allowed to join until 1934 due to a European-wide fear of communism
Diplomatic (moral) sanctions?
The council of the league could, in an international dispute, decide who was in the wrong and cut communications with the aggressor
Economic Sanctions?
The League could tell member states not to trade with the aggressor
Military Sanctions
The Council could instruct its members to provide troops to fight against the aggressor
What was a key structural weakness of the LoN?
That USA wasn’t part of it. The league did not have its own standing army and the US had the most powerful army in the world. If the league needed an army, they had to rely on individual countries which was a problem as reactions could be slow.
