Why was the Beveridge Report produced?
In 1942, he was ask by the wartime government to conduct an investigation and look at how to provide sickness and unemployment benefits
What did Beveridge believe about the giants?
There was on point on the government only fixing one, action had to be taken on them all
Beveridge’s plans included:
- government minister controlling benefits
- setting up an NHS
- unemployed people being allowed benefits for as long as the needed them
He also suggested:
- all working people to pay National Insurance (to pay for the plans)
- New and extended benefits,such as family allowances and pensions for widows
Positive reaction to the report:
- public were enthusiastic that this would change their lives
- support from all politicians
Negative reaction to the report:
- too expensive
- too much power to the government
- women given to little support
- disabled people not given enough support
What did the coalition government do?
Labour Party credited for putting Beveridge Report into action but coalition government made a start
What was the 1943 ministry set up to do?
Supervise insurance benefits
What did the Ministry of Town and Country Planning (1943) do?
new towns were planned, temporary housing built for homeless
What was ineffective about the Coalition government’s 1945 family allowance act (June)?
benefits not as generous as Beveridge had proposed, payments delayed for a year

National health service, employment policy and social insurance but nothing radical with the exception of education as concentrating on war
