The lymphatic system Flashcards
4 major components of the lymphatic system
lymph plasma-interstitial fluid that passes into lymphatic vessels (clear)
lymph vessels-transport lymph and transport tissue fluid from capillaries to blood stream
lymph organs-contain lymphocytes in lymphoid tissue
bone marrow-contains stem cells that become immune cells
What is the function of the lymphatic system
to transport dietary lipids (from digestive to blood)
drain excess interstitial fluid (return interstitial fluid from tissue back into blood)
Carries out immune response (recruits immune cells)
Lymphatic pathway
lymphatic capillaries
afferent(arrives) lymphatic vessels
lymph nodes
efferent(exit) lymphatic vessels
lymphatic ducts
lymphatic ducts
right lymphatic duct and thoracic duct
Lymphatic capillaries
highly permeable
composed of endothelial cells
interstitial fluid pressure
interstitial fluid enters lymphatic capillary
Location of lymph nodes and characteristics
cervical-neck region superficial and deep
axillary-armpit region (most of upper arm)
thoracic-recieves lymph from left side of head, neck, chest, arm and below ribs
abdominal-interstitial lymph nodes
peyers patch
inguinal-groin region, superficial and deep
lymphatic ducts
the right lymphatic duct side drains the upper right side of body and empties it into subclavian vein
the thoracic duct is the largest vessel draining the rest of the body, begins as cisterna chylii
Structure of lymph node
afferent vessels
subscapular sinus
cortical/trabecular sinus
medullary sinus
hilum
efferent vessels
lymphatic vessels
Primary lymphoid organs
thymus
bone marrow
thymus
bilobed organ
in superior mediastinum
posterior to sternum
between lungs
location of t cell proliferation and maturation
Bone marrow
in flat bone
in epiphysis of some long bones
contains multipotent stem cells that develop into V cells and immature T cells
Secondary lymph organs
spleen
peyer’s patch
appendix
tonsils
Spleen
abdominal organ
filters blood
contains red and white pulp
recycles and stores red blood cells
Peyers patch
region of aggregated lymphoid follicles
located in ileum of small intestine
Appendix
vermiform appendix has various regions of lymphatiuc nodules
Tonsils
pharyngeal tonsil
palatine tonsil
lingual tonsil
