The lungs Flashcards
give a step by step introduction in what happens in the lungs
lungs are in the thorax
1) thorax is the top part of the body
2) it is separated from the lower part of the body by the diaphragm
3) the lungs are like big sponged and are protected by rincage
4) the air that you breathe in goes through the trachea. this splits into two tubes called bronchi (each one is bronchus), one going to each lung
5) the bronchi split into progressively smaller tubes called bronchioles
6) The bronchioles finally end at small bags called alveoli
where does gas exchange take place in the lungs
the alveoli
how many alveoli are in the lungs
millions and millions of alveoli, surrounded by a network of blood capillaries
what happens to the blood passing next to the alveoli that has just been returned to the lungs from the rest of the body
blood contains lots of carbon dioxide and very little oxygen.
carbon dioxide diffuses out of the blood into the alveolus to be breathed out.
what happens to the oxygen when blood reaches body cells
oxygen is released from the red blood cells (high concentration) and diffuses into the body cells ( low concentration).
what happens to carbon dioxide when blood reaches body cells
carbon dioxide diffuses out of the body cells (high concentration) into the blood (low concentration), it is then carried back to the lungs
how do you work out breaths per minute
breaths per minute = number of breaths / number of minutes
