Cancer Flashcards
how is a tumour formed
uncontrolled growth and division is a result of changes that occur to the cells and results in the formation of a tumour. not all tumours are cancerous they can be benign or malignant
What is benign
tumour grows until there is no more room, the tumour stays in one place rather than invading other tissues in the body. this type isn’t normally dangerous, and the tumour is not cancerous
what is malignant
tumour grows and spreads to neighbouring healthy tissues. cells can break off and spread to other parts of the body by travelling in the bloodstream. the malignant cells then invade healthy tissues elsewhere in the body and form secondary tumours. malignant tumours are dangerous and can. be fatal
risk factors for cancer
smoking - lung, mouth, bowel, stomach and cervical cancer
obesity - bowel, liver and kidney cancer
UV exposure - skin cancer
viral infection - liver cancer
what is another way of risk factors can associated with cancer
genetics
1) you can inherit faulty family genes - making you susceptible for cancer
2) mutations in BRCA genes have been linked to increased likelihood of breast and ovarian cancer
