more on enzymes and digestion Flashcards
what do salivary glands do
produce amylase enzyme in the saliva
what does the stomach do
1) pummels food with its muscular wall
2) produces the protease enzyme, pepsin
3) produces hydrochloric acid for 2 reasons:
a) to kill bacteria
b) to give the right pH for the protease enzyme to work (pH - 2)
what does the liver do
where bile is produced. bile neutralises stomach acid and emulsifies fats
what does the gall bladder do
where bile is stored, before it is released into the small intestine
what does the pancreas do
produces protease, amylase and lipase enzymes. it releases into the small intestine
what does the large intestine do
where excess water is absorbed from the food
what does the small intestine do
1) produces protease, amylase and lipase enzymes to complete digestion
2) this is also where food is absorbed out of the digestive system into the blood.
what does the rectum do
where the faeces are stored before they bid you a fond farewell through the anus.
