Cardiovascular Disease Flashcards
what is the cardiovascular disease
term used to describe diseases of the heart or blood vessels, for example coronary heart disease
what is the coronary heart disease
when the coronary arteries that supply the blood to the muscles of the heart get blocked by layers of fatty materials building up.
Causing arteries to become narrow, so blood flow is restricted meaning a lack of oxygen to the heart muscle - result to heart attack
what are stents
tubes that are inserted inside the arteries. They keep them open, making sure blood can pass through to the heart muscles.
what is cholesterol
an essential lipid that your body produces and needs to function properly
what does having to much cholesterol do
cause fatty deposits to form inside arteries, which can lead to coronary heart disease
what are statins
drugs that can reduce the amount of bad cholesterol present in the bloodstream. This slows down the rate of fatty deposits forming
advantages of statins
- statins can reduce the risk of strokes, coronary heart disease and heart attacks by reducing the amount of bad cholesterol
- statins can increase the amount of a beneficial cholesterol known as good cholesterol or HDL cholesterol. this removes bad cholesterol from the blood
- statins may also help prevent some other diseases.
disadvantages of statins
- long-term drug that must be taken regularly. risk that someone could forget them
- statins could sometimes cause negative side effects such as headaches. Also some serious ones such as kidney failure, liver damage and memory loss
- the effects for statins to kick in takes time
