Circulatory System - The Heart Flashcards
what is the circulatory system made up of
heart, blood vessels and blood
what are the two systems that are joined to make the double circulatory system
pulmonary circuit
systemic circuit
what happens in the pulmonary circuit
right ventricle pumps deoxygenated blood from the body to the lungs, where gas exchange takes place, and then back to the heart
what happens in the systemic circuit
pumps oxygenated blood from the lungs to the heart and then to the rest of the body
what is the heart
a pumping organ that keeps blood flowing around the body
why does the heart have valves
to make sure that blood flows in the right direction - prevents it from flowing backwards
what are the four chambers in the heart
right atrium, left atrium, right ventricle and left ventricle
what is the process of the blood travelling through the heart
De-oxygenated blood comes into the right atrium from the body, moves into the right ventricle and is pushed into the pulmonary arteries in the lungs. After picking up oxygen, the blood travels back to the heart through the pulmonary veins into the left atrium, to the left ventricle and out to the body’s tissues through the aorta.
how does the heart make sure that it gets all the oxygenated blood
Arteries called coronary arteries branch off the aorta and surrounds the heart, making sure that it gets all the oxygenated blood it needs
