What does it consist of?
A Chair, four other Law Commissioners and support and research staff.
What is it’s stated aim? 4
To ensure law is:
Fair, modern, simple and cost-effective
What does it mean to reform the law?
To update it.
Who can refer areas to the Commission?
The government via the Lord Chancellor
What is the first step of reform?
Open a consultation
What does a consultation set out?
The current law and why it needs to be reformed.
What will the consultation invite?
Responses from interested parties
What happens after the consultation?
The commission will issue a report, often containing a draft Bill
What does codification mean?
Reviewing all the law on one topic and creating a complete code of law
What does consolidation mean?
Drawing all the existing provisions in an area of law together into one Act.
How is consolidation different to codification?
The law is not changed, only brought together.
What does repeal mean?
The Act ceases to be law.
What can the Law Commission do in regards to repealing?
Advise Parliament about which acts should be repealed
