What is the Council’s function?
Principal law-making body of EU
How is voting decided in council?
- 55 per cent of Member States vote in favour, and
- Proposal is supported by Member States representing
65 percent of EU population.
What is the Council made up of?
A representative of each nation, in the specific topic (e.g. agriculture).
What is the Commissions function? 4
Proposes new laws
EU’s admin
Ensures treaties are properly implemented
Responsible for EU’s budget and supervises how money is spent
What is the Commission made up of?
One commissioner from each member state who must act independently.
How long are the Commissioners serving for?
5 year term
What is the European Parliaments function? 5
Meets once a month in parties. Discuss proposals made by Commission Co-legislate (equal to Council) Approve or reject proposals from Commission Decides international agreements Permits or rejects new member states
What is the European Parliament made up of?
751 members of the European Parliament (MEP)
Elected by electorate of Member States (5 years)
What are the number of MEPs decided by?
The size of the population of the country
What is the Court of Justice of the European Union’s function 3
Decides whether a Member State has failed in its obligations.
Hears references from national courts for preliminary rulings on points of EU law.
What is the Court of Justice of the European Union made up of
Sits in Luxembourg with one judge from each State.
