The Kidneys Flashcards
What happens when mineral concentration too high in blood
cells shrivel because water moves into blood stream
What happens when mineral concentration too low in blood
cells burst because water moves into cell
How do we lose water (controlled and uncontrolled)
controlled in urine
uncontrolled in breathing and sweating
What is urea and where does it come from
from ammonia but it is less toxic and ammonia comes from break down of excess amino acids
WASTE PRODUCT
Which organs control water, mineral ions and urea levels in body
kidneys
How do the kidneys work
blood vessels in nephrons of kidney go near tubules
TUBULES absorb small molecules and filters them
What happens to each of the small molecules in the tubule
Glucose is 100% reabsorbed back into body using active transport
some water and mineral ions go in (VARIABLE)
0% urea reabsorbed
What happens to the urea in the tubules
becomes part of urine
What is the kidney filtration process known as
SELECTIVE REABSORPTION
When there is too much water in body what is the response (simple)
excess water will flow to the bladder because cant be reabsorbed from tubules since not enough ways to re enter
What is important to remember when there is too much water in body
there is NO coordinator it just waits for kidney to process
What is the receptor and what is the coordinator and what is the effector in this process
The recptor = hypothalamus
Coordinator = pituitary gland (secretes ADH)
effector = the kidney
When there is too little water in the body what happens
Hypothalamus detects it
Pituitary gland receives signal and releases ADH hormone
This tells tubules to reabsorb more water into the blood
this decreases volume of water in urine
What is wee colour like when
a) lots of water in body
b) little water in body
A = clear water because more vol water
B = dark urine because higher conc of urea
