Hormones in the menstrual cycle Flashcards
What is FSH and what does it cause
FSH is follicle stimulating hormone
It causes maturation of the egg in a follicle in the ovary
Where is FSH produced
Pituitary Gland
What hormone stimulates production of oestrogen
FSH
What 3 things does oestrogen cause
stimulates the endometrium to thicken
suppresses the production of FSH
Stimulates production of luteinising hormone
What is the endometrium
the lining of the uterus
What does LH cause
ovulation (release of egg from follicle)
Where is LH produced
pituitary gland
Where is progesterone originally produced
the corpus luteum which is the ruptured follicle from where the egg was released
What 2 jobs does progesterone do
1 stops uterus lining from breaking down and keeps it thick incase of pregnancy
2 suppresses LH and FSH production to prevent more eggs entering uterus incase pregnancy
What happens if no pregnancy occurs to progesterone levels
they rapidly drop and stimulate menstruation
endometrium loses thickness and sheds (period)
What if a pregnancy occurs - where is progesterone produced
the placenta
What is the order of the 4 hormones in the menstrual cycle
FSH
Oestrogen
LH
Progesterone
