The Eye Structure Flashcards
What is the first structure light passes through when hitting the eye
cornea - fully transparent to let light in - no blood vessels
Why do we need the cornea and how does it get O2
it refracts light so it can focus on our retina and O2 diffuses in from air
What is the iris and what does it do
the coloured bit of the eye
controls how big or small pupil is
What ACTUALLY is the pupil
a gap in the iris that allows light through to the lens
What is the lens function but how does it differ to the cornea
It also refracts light BUT it can vary its shape thus varying how much it refracts the light
What is the retina made up of
two types of receptor cells
What are the two receptor cells called on retina
cone cells
rod cells
What light are cone cells sensitive to
BUT what are they not good at
COLOUR
working in low light conditions
What are rod cells more sensitive to
low light conditions
What is the fovea and what cells are there
a spot on the retina which contain lots of cone cells so we can see most clearly here
What is the optic nerve and what does it not allow
transmits impulses from receptor cells to brain
BUT
acts as a blindspot because no image can be formed from here
