Body Temperature Flashcards
What body system controls the body temp
nervous system
What is the order of events in body temp controlling (i.e electrical impulse pathway)
stimuli –> sensory neurone –> CNS (spinal cord) –> relay neurone –> motor neurone –> effector
What is the stimuli for body temperature
temperature of blood
What detects the change in body temp
the hypothalamus in brain
What happens to reduce body temperature when TOO HOT
heat released because skin receives electrical impulse from brain
- aterioles muscles relax to widen lumen and allow more blood to flow nearer to the surface of skin (VASODILATION)
-sweat glands produce sweat and water from sweat is heated by skin until it evaporates which takes heat energy away from body reducing overall temperature
What happens to increase body temperature when TOO COLD
muscle contracts to extend hairs which traps air between outside and skin - air is a good insulator it reduces heat loss
arterioles muscles contract to reduce lumen width to allow less blood to flow nearer to surface of skin (VASOCONSTRICTION)
shivering = rapid muscle contractions to try keep body temp up
How does sweat cool us down
thermal energy produced from body allows water from sweat to evaporate and transfer energy to environment.
Therefore reducing amount of energy in your body and lowers temp
