The importance of the conservation of biodiversity (yr1) Flashcards
Biogeochemical cycles
A pathway by which a chemical substance cycles the biotic and abiotic compartments of the earth.
Biotic - Biosphere/living organisms
Abiotic- atmosphere/hydrosphere/lithosphere
Biological control
A method of controlling pests such as insects, mites, weeds and plant diseases using other organisms
Biomimetics
Emulation of models, systems and elements of nature for the purpose of solving complex human problems.
Centres of Diversity
A geographical area where a group of organisms either domesticated or wild have first developed its characteristics
Decomposer
An organism that decomposes organic material
Examples -> soil bacterium, fungus, invertebratves
Detritivore
An animal which feeds on dead organic material
Interspecies relationship
A friendship where each organism benefits from the activity of one another
Parasite
An organism that lives on/in another and benefits by deriving nutrients from its host at its hosts expense
Pathogen
A bacterium/virus/micro-organism that can cause disease
Physiological research
Study of normal function within a living creature
Pollination
The transfer of pollen to a stigma, ovule, flower or plant to allow fertilisation
Vavilov Centre
Regions where a high diversity of wild relatives can be found
