Conditions for life on earth (yr1) Flashcards
Albedo
A proportion of the incident light or radiation that is reflected by a surface
Ambient Gas
Atmospheric air in its natural state, not contaminated by airborne pollutants
Atmosphere
The envelope of gases surrounding the planets
Biosphere
The regions of the surface on an atmosphere of earth or another planet occupied by living organisms
Carbon Sequestration
A natural or artificial process by which carbon dioxide is removed from the atmosphere and held in solid or liquid form
Greenhouse gas
A gas that contributes to the greenhouse effect by absorbing infrared radiation .
Hydrosphere
All the waters on the earths surface including lakes, seas, rivers and sometimes clouds.
Insolation
Exposure to the sons rays reaching a given area
Lithosphere
The rigid outer part of the earth consisting of the crust and upper mantle
Magnetosphere
The region surrounding the a planet in which its magnetic field is.
Ozone layer
A layer in earths stratosphere containing high concentrations of O3 which absorbs most of the ultraviolet radiation from the sun
Photoautotroph
Organisms that use light energy and inorganic carbon to produce organic materials.
Specific Heat Capacity
The heat required to raise the temperature of a given substance by a given amount.
Example -> 1kg of water by 1 degrees C
What is dendrochronology?
Measuring trees
growth rings in response to seasonal changes
What is pollen analysis?
Where the residue pollen can be used to determine which plants lived in a certain area
