The Human Nervous System : PNS Flashcards
What is the peripheral nervous system made up of?
All the nerves outside the CNS
The PNS sends information to the CNS from:
Outside world
The PNS sends information from the CNS to:
Muscles and glands in the body
Somatic response responds to?
Information form sensory receptors
SNS transmits info…
from: receptor cells in sensory organs
towards: CNS using sensory neurons.
SNS Receives info…
from: CNS directing muscles to act using motor neurons.
Describe Autonomic Nervous System (ANS)
Automatic + involuntary
(ANS) Important in homeostasis as it controls:
Automatic responses + vital functions
(ANS) In doing this it governs responses including:
- breathing
- heartbeat
- stress response
- sexual arouse
How does the CNS work with the endocrine system?
Fight and flight response
What are the divisions of ANS?
Sympathetic
Parasympathetic
Define sympathetic
- When the body is involved in a ‘fight or flight’ response to a stressful event.
- The sympathetic nervous system gets the body ready by increasing heart and breathing rates
Define parasympathetic
- The normal resting state of the body.
- After a stressful event, the parasympathetic nervous system returns the body to its normal resting state.
- Works in opposition to the sympathetic nervous system and acts as a ‘brake’ to the fight or flight response.
