Social Learning Theory Flashcards
What is SLT a branch of?
Behaviourism
What is the difference between SLT and behaviourism?
SLT believes learning is a social process
Behaviour occurs as a result of social learning (learning from others)
Behaviourists believe environmental factors and associations implements or behaviour
How does the SLT think we learn?
By imitating and observing others (role models)
Define vicarious reinforcement
Reinforcement which is not directly experienced but occurs through observing someone else
What is a similarity between SLT and behaviourism?
Both believe behaviour is learned
What was Bandura’s aim?
To show that we learn from observing and imitating others
Who were Bandura’s participant?
Young children
Describe Bandura’s method
2 groups:
1) Watched adult be aggressive towards bobo doll
Sometimes verbally aggressive
2) Watched adult be non aggressive towards bobo doll
What were Bandura’s findings?
1st group were more aggressive to the bobo doll
The imitated specific actions displayed by the model
Boys imitated more aggressively than girls
What does the mediational processes allow us to do?
Develop behaviour through modelling
What are the 4 mediational processes?
Attention
retention
motor reproduction
motivation
Which processes assist learning?
Attention
retention
Which processes produce behaviour?
Motor reproduction
Motivation
Define attention
To learn, observer needs to PAY ATTENTION to the modelled behaviour
Describe retention
Observer must REMEMBER the behaviour
