the human lungs Flashcards
how do lungs look
they look roughly like an up side down cone with the wider end touching the diaphragm muscle
the appearance of lungs
two lungs are spongy in appearance
what is a diaphragm
it is a thin sheet like muscle that separates the thoracic cavity from the abdominal cavity
intercostal muscles location
between the ribs of the rib cage that protects the lungs are located the other set of breathing muscles and the intercostal muscles
hilum
the concave side of each lung
function of the pulmonary artery and pulmonary vein
the pulmonary artery enters the lungs and the pulmonary vein leave the lungs at the hilum
bronchi
two branches of the trachea that also enters the lungs at the hilum
how many lobes does each lung have
the right lung has three lobes while the left lung has two lobes
pluera
a double membrane
function of pluera
covers the outside of the lungs and the inside of the thoracic cavity
what seperates the two layers of pluera
it is separated by a thin film of fluid
what is the function of the fluid
the fluid serves to reduce friction during breathing movement
what happens to the bronchi in the lungs
the bronchi divides and sub divides to form smaller and smaller tubules called broncioles
do the smaller bronchioles have cartilaginous rings
no
alveoli
air sacs that contain bronchioles
