blood tissue Flashcards
structure of blood
it is salty , slightly sticky and reddish fluid .
what is the pH of blood
it is a little over 7 making it a alkali solution
what i the average amount of blood that humans have
5-6 litres of blood
what 55% of the blood made up of
liquid substance called blood plasma
what is 45 % of the blood made up of
blood corpuscles
what is the liquid blood plasma made of
90% of water and 10% of dissolved substances
what does the dissolved substances include
digested food , salt , gases , excretory wastes , plasma proteins ,hormones , enzymes and antibodies
what is the function of antibodies
they protect the body against diseases from microbes
what are microbes
micro -organisms which cause diseases
give an example of plasma protein.
fibrinogen
what is the function of fibrinogen
helps in the clotting of blood
how many typed of corpuscles are there
three types
name the three types of corpuscles
red blood corpuscles or erythrocytes, white blood corpuscles or leucocytes and blood platelets
structure of erythrocytes
disc-shaped and have no nuclei and contain the pigment haemoglobin
function of haemoglobin
haemoglobin gives blood its red colour
the structure of leucocytes
irregularly shaped and have nuclei
the structure of platelets
fragments (broken off pieces ) of cells without nuclei
fuction of blood plasma
it acts as a transport meduim for :
1. digested foof substances such as glucose and amino acids
2. excretory productus such as urea and uric acid
3. plasma proteins such as fibrinogen which play an important part in hte clotting of blood
4. salts
5. gases such as oxygen and carbon dioxide
6. hormones and enzymes
function of erytrocy
fuction of erytrocytes
the oxygen is dissolved in the haemoglobin and forms oxyhaemoglobin befor being transported
main functin is to transport oxygen
function of leucocytes
proctects the body in the following ways :
1. they engulf the microbes
2. they may form barries against microbes
3. they may produce antibodies to destroy the micobes
function of the blood platelets
plays an important role in blood clotting
function of the blood system
- it absorbs digested food from the alimentary canal and transports it to all parts of the body
- it absorbs oxygen in the lungs and transports it to all the parts of the body
- it transports excretory wastes to the excretory organs (kidney, skin , lungs and sweat glands )
