cell division Flashcards
what does each body cell or somatic cell of every organism have
its own distinct number of chromosomes
what do we ,mean by somatic cells
all the cells in plant and animal body , besides sex cells
how are chromosomes arranged
in pairs
how many pairs of chromosomes are in there in humans
23 pairs
what are the 22 different pairs of chromosomes called
autosomes
what are the pair of sex chromosomes called
gonosomes
how are the two chromosomes making up each pair
they are identical to each other
in females the sex chromosomes are referred to as
xx chromosomes
in males the sex chromosomes are referred to as
xy chromosomes
why do we say cells has a diploid number of chromosomes
because there are two sets of 23 different kinds of chromosomes in each somatic cell
why do we say gametes have a haploid number of chromosomes
gametes have just one set of 23 different chromosomes
note that
the two chromosomes making up each pair of autosomes are identical
where does a member of each pair come from
from maternal origin ( comes from the mothers) and paternal origin( from the fathers)
homologous pair of chromosomes
a pair of identical chromosomes one of maternal origin and the other of paternal origin
how do chromosomes appear after dna replication
they appear double , each being made up of two chromatids being held together by a centromere
