the heart intro Flashcards
What loop is the cardiovascular system?
double loop
What is systemic circulation?
delivers blood to all body cells and carries away waste
What is pulmonary circulation?
eliminates carbon dioxide and oxygenates blood (lung pathway)
What is the size of the heart?
14cm x 9cm (size of fist)
Where is the heart located?
located in the mediastinum (2nd rib/5th intercostal space)
What is the distal part of the heart called?
the apex
Where are the coronary arteries located?
on the surface of the heart
What is the function of the coronary arteries?
supply blood to the heart
What encloses the heart like a bag?
fibrous pericardium, has two layers
What is the inner layer of the fibrous pericardium?
visceral pericardium
What is the outer layer of the fibrous pericardium?
parietal pericardium
What is the pericardial cavity?
contains fluid to reduce friction
What are the three layers of the wall of the heart?
epicardium (aka visceral pericardium), myocardium, endocardium
What is the epicardium?
aka visceral pericardium, outer layer of the heart wall, reduces friction
What is the myocardium?
middle layer of the heart wall, mostly cardiac muscles
