heart malfunctions Flashcards
What is SADS / SIDS?
sudden arrhythmia death syndrome / sudden adult death syndrome
What is a defibrillator?
common treatment for cardiac arrhythmia, shocks the heart and reestablishes normal rhythm
What is CPR and how is it performed?
cardiopulmonary resuscitation, chest compressions
What are heart murmurs?
unusual sound heard during a heartbeat, may be a valve issue
What is MVP (mitral valve prolapse)?
valve shifts out of place, creates clicking sound at the end of a constriction
What is mitral regurgiation?
regurgitation of blood occurs w/ mitral valve prolapse, or mitral valve/aortic stenosis
What is myocardial infarction?
heart attack, obstruction to coronary artery, can lead to cardiac arrest
What is atherosclerosis/arteriosclerosis?
deposits of fatty materials (cholesterol) and forms a plaque in the arteries, reduces blood flow
What is hypertension?
high blood pressure, force within the arteries too high
What is an aneurysm?
localized, blood-filled, balloon like bulge in the wall of a blood vessel
What is a stroke?
blood flow to brain is cut off
What is aortic stenosis?
valve/aorta is narrowed, limiting blood flow
What is a ventricular septal defect?
hole exists between two sides of the heart
