blood flow in the heart Flashcards
Where does pulmonary flow?
blood travels to the lungs then back to the heart
Where does systemic flow?
blood travels to the body then back to the heart
How many chambers does the heart have?
4, 2 atria and 2 ventricles
What are the 2 atria?
upper chambers that receive blood returning though the heart through veins
What are the 2 ventricles?
thick, muscular lower chambers, receive blood from the atria above them, then pumps blood out of the heart through arteries
What is the septum?
separates right and left sides of the heart
How many valves in the heart are there?
4 total, 2 atrioventricular and 2 semilunar valves
What are the functions of the heart valves?
allows one way flow of blood
What are the two atrioventricular valves?
the left atrioventricular (bicuspid/mitral) and the right atrioventricular (tricuspid)
What are the two semilunar valves?
aortic valve (b/w left ventricle & aorta) and pulmonary valve (b/w right ventricle and pulmonary trunk
What are the flaps of the valves called?
cusps
What are chordae tendineae?
cords that anchor the valves to the ventricle
What are papillary muscles?
what the chordae tendineae is anchored to
