The Heart Flashcards
They begin with the aorta, the large artery leaving the heart. Arteries carry oxygen-rich blood away from the heart to all of the body’s tissues. They branch several times, becoming smaller and smaller as they carry blood further from the heart and into organs.
Arteries
These are small, thin blood vessels that connect the arteries and the veins. Their thin walls allow oxygen, nutrients, carbon dioxide, and other waste products to pass to and from our organ’s cells.
Capillaries
These are blood vessels that take blood back to the heart; this blood has lower oxygen content) and is rich in waste products that are to be excreted or removed from the body. Veins become larger and larger as they get closer to the heart. The superior vena cava is the large vein that brings blood from the head and arms to the heart, and the inferior vena cava brings blood from the abdomen and legs into the heart.
Veins
Cardiovascular system contains
Heart, blood, blood vessels
Purpose of the cardiovascular system
Vessels carry blood throughout body, heart pumps the blood and allows for oxygen carbon dioxide exchange and blood transports nutrients and hormones
Function of blood
Maintain constant environment, carry oxygen and nutrients to cells, deliver waste and carbon dioxide to and from organs, transport hormones from endocrine system
Two parts of blood
Liquid- plasma and 91% water
Cellular- contains leukocytes (white blood cells), erythrocytes (red blood cells) and thrombocytes (platelets)
Function of the vessels (arteries, veins, capillaries)
Transport blood and carry away cellular waste and co2
Function of the heart
Circulate blood through the body
Abnormal dilation of an artery
Aneurysm
Chest pain described as spasmodic and choking
Angina
Angiography
Diagnostic test of blood vessels
Angioplasty
Procedure used to dilate a vessel opening
Atherectomy
Removal of plaque from an artery by a percutaneous method
Bundle of his
Cardiac fibers that allow heart rhythm
