The heart Flashcards
structure of the heart
Atrium: thin walls, elastic. stretches when it collects blood. only has to pump blood to the ventricle so muscle wall is thin.
Ventricle: much thicker muscular wall as it has to pump blood to lungs or rest of body
which side deals with what
the left side deals with oxygenated blood from the lungs
the right side deals with deoxygenated blood from the lungs and the body
what are valves
valves prevent the backflow of blood into the atria when the ventricles contract
what are the types of valves
left artioventricular valve (bicuspid). 2 cup shaped flaps on the left side of the heart
right atrioventricular valve (tricuspid). 3 cup shaped flaps on the right of the heart
what are the 4 pulmonary vessels
Aorta
Vena cava
Pulmonary artery
Pulmonary vein
Aorta
connected to the left ventricle and carries oxygenated blood to all parts of the body EXCEPT the lungs
Vena cava
connected to the right atrium, brings back deoxygentaed blood from the tissues of the body
Pulmonary artery
connected to the right ventricle, carries deoxygenated blood to the lungs, where the oxygen is replenished
Pulmonary vein
connected to the left atrium, brings back oxygenated blood from the lungs
