Immunity Flashcards
What is an antigen?
it is recognized as foreign by the body and stimulates an immune response
B Lymphocytes
humoral immunity, made in bone marrow, involves antibodies present in body fluids
T Lymphocytes
cell mediated immunity, made in thymus gland, involves body cells.
What do T lymphocytes do?
they respond to an organisms own cells that have been invaded, for example, cancer cells. pathogens invade body, phagocyte places antigen on its surface, receptors fit onto that antigen, this activates t cells to divide rapidly and they kill infected cells
What do B lymphocytes do?
Plasma cells, secrete antibodies that kill the pathogen but they only survive for 2 hours. So memory cells are also produced, they survive much longer and when they encounter the same pathogen again they can divide into plasma cells and kill the pathogen
