what is the heart?
the organ that pumps blood around your body
what is the heart made up of?
2 pumps that beat together about 70 times each minute
what are the walls of the heart made up of?
takes blood to the body
what does the aorta do?
takes blood to the body
what does the palmonary artery do?
takes blood to the lungs to be oxygenated
what do the palmonary veins do?
brings oxygenated blood from the lungs back to the heart
what does the vena cava do?
brings deoxygenated blood from the body back to the heart
what does the right atrium do?
forces deoxygenated blood into the right ventricle
what does the right and left ventricle do?
forces deoxygenated into the lungs
what does the left atrium do?
forces deoxygenated blood into the left ventricle
what is the heart beat controlled by?
a group of cells on the right atrium of the heart called the pacemaker
how does the pacemaker control the heart rate?
they produce small electrical impulses that cause the heart to contract
what do coronary arteries do?
supply oxygen to heart muscles
what can happen to coronary arteries?
they can be blocked by fatty deposit and cause coronary heart disease
what can happen with coronary heart disease?
parts of the heart muscle may die causing a heart attack
what is cholesterol?
a type of fat carried by blood
what can fatty deposit do?
slow blood flow which makes it more likely that more fat will be deposited
what happens if you don’t get enough exercise?
increases blood pressure
what does smoking and high blood pressure do?
damages lining
how can you treat coronary heart disease?
stents- metal cylinders inserted into artery
statins- medicines
heart transplant
what is the heart muscle supplied with oxygen by?
coronary arteries
