the heart Flashcards
what side of the heart pumps deoxygenated blood
right
what side of the heart pumps oxygenated blood
left
what is the circulation through the left side called
systemic circulation
what is the circulation through the right side called
pulmonary circulation
what are the 4 chambers of the heart
left atrium, right atrium
left ventricle, right ventricle
where does the blood pump to on the left side of the heart?
away from the heart to the body
where does the blood pump to on the right side of the heart?
towards the heart
what do the valves do
- keeps blood moving in 1 direction
- opens as the heart contracts and closed as the heart relaxes
- prevents backflow
what does the superior vena cava do
a large vein that carries deoxygenated blood from the upper body (head, shoulder, neck and arms) into the heart
what does the pulmonary artery do?
carries deoxygenated blood from the heart to the lungs
what does the aorta do?
carried oxygenated blood from the heart to the rest of the body (organs)
what does the pulmonary vein do?
carries oxygenated blood from the lungs back to the heart
veins carry blood…
towards the heart
arteries carry blood …
away from the heart
what type of blood do arteries carry
oxygenated with the exception of pulmonary artery
what type of blood do veins carry
deoxygenated with the exception of the pulmonary vein
atria (both left and right atrium)
are receiving stations for the blood entering the heart.
what does the atrioventricular valve do?
ensures blood flows from the atria to the ventricles
what does the inferior vena cava do
carries deoxygenated blood from the lower body (legs, torso) back to the heart
what do the chordae tendineae do
(often called the heart strings)
tendons that connect the papillary muscles to the atrioventricular valves preventing the valves from prolapsing into the atria during systole
what are the papillary muscles
small cone shaped muscles that attach to the atrioventricular valves through the chordae tendineae
what does the apex do?
the hearts pointed tip loacted at the end of the heart.
what does the septum do
ensures proper blood flow and prevents mixing of oxygenated and deoxygenated blood
which side of the heart is thicker and why?
the left side requires a lot more muscle to pump the blood further around the body
what do capillaries do
they deliver nutrients and oxygen to the cells through blood and collects wastes from your cells
where does blood travel after leaving the heart before returning
heart > arteries > atrioles > capillaries > venules > veins > heart
what type of blood do the capillaries carry
both
it carries oxygenated blood to organs where it become deoxygenated
what is the structure of a capillary
microscopic blood vessels one cell thick.
what do arteries do
- carries blood away from the heart
what do arterioles do
vasoconstrict and vasodilate to control body temperature
what is the structure of an artery
thick muscular elastic walls with no valves
what does the coronary artery do
supplies the heart itself with blood
