lymphatic system Flashcards
3 functions of the lymphatic system
- excess fluid
- fat absorption
3.helps fight disease
excess fluid :
> fluid tends to leak out at the arterial end of the blood capillary due to high pressure and it returned through the lymphatic system
what is the fluid returned to the blood known as
lymph
how does lymph enter the bloodstream again
subclavian vein
helps fight disease
> lymph entering the lymph nodes contains cell debris, foreign particles and micro organisms. some of which can cause disease and need to be destroyed
inside the nodes are leukocytes and macrophages that work together to get rid of the foreign particles through phagocytosis
what is lymph
- a fluid that comes from between cells
- a clear yellow liquid
how is lymph returned to the circulatory system?
blind lymph capillary > lymph vessel > lymph node > lymph vessel > lymph duct > subclavian vein > returns to blood
how is lymph moved around
it is pushed through by your skeletal muscles
they contract to push through and backflow is prevented by valves
lymph vessels
one way of carrying fluids away from the tissues
lymph capillaries
larger and more permeable than blood capillaries
lymph nodes
-occur at intervals on the vessels
- been shaped
-between 1-25 mm
