Why did the plot happen?
The conspirators were Catholic and the king was Protestant and had made new laws to make life harder for Catholics e.g they could not hear mass, be baptised or marry. Attending church was compulsory and refusal would lead to fines
What was intended to happen?
They planned to blow up the Houses of Parliament when the king was in there and kidnap princess Elizabeth
Why did they want to kidnap princess Elizabeth?
So that they could turn her into a Catholics and become a Catholic queen
Were did they plant the gunpowder?
It is thought that they tunnelled and rented a cellar beneath the Houses of Parliament
How much gunpowder was there?
There was 36 barrels of it
What went wrong with the first batch of gunpowder?
It went off so had to be replaced
How did James I find out about the plot?
The Catholic Lord Monteagle was sent a letter, so he sent a letter to James who realised from it that there were plots against him
What happened to Guy Fawkes?
He was captured, then tortured into giving away all the plan and then was punished for treason by being hanged, drawn and quartered
Who caught the other conspirators and why were they caught?
They were caught and shot by muskets, when attempting another plot as nobody wanted to help them due to the previous failed attempt
What book was published after the plot and what was it?
The “king’s book” was published soon after by James I to encourage anti catholic attitudes
What happened in 1605?
The Thanksgiving Act ordered the events of the 5th of November was to be commemorated every year, Catholics were also banned from working in the legal profession or being officers in the armed forces
What happened in 1606?
The Popish Recusants Act was introduced which forces Catholics to take oath of alliance to the English Crown and were forced to partake in Church of England services and rituals or pay fines
