A

A state in which the police are used to control what people do and say. These police are often secret.

What was the role of the SS?

A

To be personal bodyguards for Hitler, they were loyal to Hitler and they carried out the role of racial purification.

What was the Gestapo?

A

They were Hitler’s non-uniformed secret police force set up by Hermann Goering. They could not be told apart from normal Germans. They arrested people who spoke out against Nazi ideas and offenders could be sentenced without trial.

What were the first Nazi concentration camps like?

A

The first CC was opened in Dachav in 1933. They were often located in isolated areas outside cities. Inmates where political prisoners or “undesirables” such as Jews.

What was the SD?

A

The SD was a security force, allowing the Nazi Party to monitor its opponents. Heinhard Heydrich was the leader. They kept a card index with people suspected of opposing the Nazis or German government at home and abroad.

What did Hitler do to law courts?

A

He took control of what happened in courts. He set up the national socialist league for the maintenance of law, insistent that all judges must be members. Judges who supported Nazi ideas were often given freedom to punish people who had not broken the law. He also set up the new people’s court to hear all treason cases with handpicked judges.

How did Hitler conform with the Catholic church?

A

Their was a concordat between Hitler and the pope. This meant that priests could not interfere with politics and had to swear loyalty to the national socialist league and Hitler would allow freedom of worship for Catholics.

A

Some protestants were grateful that Hitler had protected them from communists that they worked with the Nazis and some had flags inside their churches.

A
