Why is it referred to as The Glenlivet?

A

In 1881 George Grant Smith sued other companies that added Glenlivet to their name (due to the popularity of the area). He won the lawsuit and his distillery was allowed to use the name THE Glenlivet… all other distilleries had to use ________ - Glenlivet”. Over the years, 26 distilleries have used - Glenlivet in their names, although this has died out.
