The Genome and Its Transmission Flashcards
What is satellite DNA
Inactive blocks of tandem repeats
What is chromatin
DNA + protein
What do nuclear genome genes do
Allow protein binding to switch gene on/off
Influence activity of other genes
Affect how DNA is packaged/folded
What is the purpose of the chiasma
Hold maternal and paternal homologs toegether on metaphase plate
What is the difference between spermatogonia of male and female
Primary oocytes in maturation arrest (suspended at crossing over) until puberty in females
More division in male spermatogonia
What are telomeres
Allow replication at tip of chromosome
Each division will chop off a bit of telomere
What are mini satellites
No known purpose but can cause mis-pairing during cell division
What occurs if there are CAG repeats in non-coding region
Used in forensic investigation
Mispairing within them can increase/decrease their size
Can cause change in chromosome configuration and switch off certain genes
What occurs if there are CAG repeats in coding regions
Prone to expand in number
Can cause misfolding in protein
