Histology of Connective Tissue Flashcards
What are the different types of connective tissue and what differentiates them
Loose connective tissue = flexible, well vascularized
Dense irregular = resistant to stress from all directions
Dense regular = definitive pattern due to prolonged stress in 1 direction. White and inextensible
Elastin reduces and collagen increases from loose to dense
What is the function of fibroblast and how do they look like
Make ECM. Cigar shaped with elongated, euchromatic nucleus
What is the function of mast cells and how do they look like
Respond to allergic reactions. Large oval with small and central nucleus
What is the function of macrophages
Move around and phagocytose foreign material
What are the different types of adipose tissue
White = unilocular = long term energy storage Brown = multilocular = heat production
What is collagen
Long and cylindrical
Thick
Great strength
Little elasticity
What is reticular fibres
Collagen Type III
Thin and Glylcosylated fibres
Flexible network
Argophillic
What is elastin
Made of globular elastin molecules
Thin
Elastic
Formed of sheets with cross linkages
What is ground substance
Medium for exchange
Hydrated and viscous (traps pathogen)
